The short answer

Do US citizens need a visa for Azerbaijan?

US ordinary passport holders normally need a visa and are eligible to apply for an Azerbaijan e-Visa before travel. The usual electronic visa permits one entry and a stay of up to 30 days within a 90-day validity window. Use your passport book: a US passport card is not valid for international air travel.

Before you start

Three checks for your American passport

01

Take the passport book

A REAL ID, driving licence or passport card used on domestic trips is not the travel document for your flight to Azerbaijan.

02

Check the six-month travel advice

The US State Department lists six months of passport validity beyond arrival. Compare this with the separate e-Visa expiry rule before paying.

03

Use the Baku arrival date

An overnight connection can place arrival on a different date from departure in the United States. Read the final flight segment.

Azerbaijan e-Visa prices for American applicants

Choose around your intended arrival in Azerbaijan. Both packages cover the same single-entry e-Visa and permitted stay, with different processing options.

Standard e-Visa

$59USD / applicant

3 working days

For travel planned ahead. Allow extra time for document checks, public holidays and any requests for clarification.

Apply Standard — $59

Urgent e-Visa

$99USD / applicant

3-hour processing option

For a nearer departure. The urgent option operates on weekends and holidays; complete and accurate documents still matter.

Apply Urgent — $99

Each price is the total evis.az package price for one applicant. Published processing windows apply after a complete visa application is submitted. Preparation, corrections and requests for information can take additional time. Azerbaijan's authorities decide approval and entry.

Passport book, passport card and REAL ID: choose the right document

The passport card and passport book are different US documents with different travel uses. The State Department says the card cannot be used for international air travel. Upload the identity page from the book you will present to the airline, even if you also hold a card with a different number.

Enter the passport number from that book, rather than a Social Security number, driving-licence number or number from a previous passport. Read the surname and given-name fields separately, including middle names that appear as given names. An airline profile saved years ago is a useful cross-check, but the current document is the starting point.

Resolve passport expiry before choosing Standard or Urgent

Two date checks matter. US travel guidance specifies six months beyond arrival; the e-Visa conditions require the passport to extend at least three months beyond the visa expiry. The second calculation starts from the end of the visa window, not the last day of a short holiday. Check both instead of treating a passport that is valid on departure as automatically sufficient.

If the passport is near a limit, confirm acceptance with the airline and the Azerbaijani representation before committing to travel. Renew first if the replacement will be used for the journey. Urgent visa processing does not accelerate US passport issuance and does not transfer an existing visa to a replacement document.

Apply around the final flight into Azerbaijan

A booking departing the United States on Monday may arrive in Baku on Tuesday or later. Use the local arrival date shown for Azerbaijan when selecting when the visa should start. Allow for the connection and any date-line or time-zone effect; a visa beginning the next day will not cover an early arrival.

For a planned trip, Standard costs $59 per person with a three-working-day processing window. Urgent is a separate $99 total with a three-hour processing option, including weekends and holidays. Neither timing includes time spent correcting an incomplete application. Do not plan to board simply because a payment or application reference exists: check that the issued visa has actually arrived.

Can Americans obtain an Azerbaijan visa on arrival?

Do not rely on US citizenship alone for a visa at the airport. Azerbaijani consular guidance describes a conditional provision linked to direct New York–Baku travel, while the State Department tells US tourists to obtain a visa before departure. A flight with a connection does not establish that particular exception.

This guide does not confirm that a qualifying direct service is operating or that your itinerary meets an exception. Obtain individual confirmation if relying on an airport or residence-based arrangement. For a routine short visit on a regular US passport, the advance e-Visa route lets you check the issued permission before leaving.

Review the actual visa for every member of your party

A child needs an individual application; a parent’s visa does not cover the family. Use each traveller’s own passport page and check that the returned PDF belongs to that person. For mixed-nationality households, select the nationality of the passport used for each journey rather than applying the US rules to everyone.

Print the issued visa and compare the passport number, entry window and permitted stay. A Baku–Georgia–Baku holiday involves leaving and re-entering Azerbaijan; an unused portion of a single-entry visa is not a second entry. For a visit longer than 15 days, arrange place-of-stay registration separately from the visa with your accommodation provider.

Keep these to hand

Your American passport application checklist

  • Current US passport book and a readable image of its identity page.
  • Passport expiry checked against US travel advice and the visa end date.
  • Local Azerbaijan arrival date from the final flight segment.
  • Surname, every required given name and the book’s passport number.
  • Accommodation address and an email inbox you can access while travelling.
  • Separate passport records for children and any other travellers.

Check passport expiry against the visa's expiry date: the passport must remain valid for at least three months after that date. The 90-day visa window does not allow a 90-day stay; the maximum stay is 30 days.

Questions from American travellers

Can I use a US passport card for my Azerbaijan e-Visa?

Prepare the application from your passport book. A US passport card is not valid for international air travel and its number should not replace the number of the book used for this journey.

Is Azerbaijan visa-free for American tourists?

Ordinary US passport holders normally need a visa. They can use the e-Visa route for an eligible short visit. Do not assume that US citizenship alone creates a visa-free or general airport-visa entitlement.

Which date do I use if I leave the US one day before arriving in Baku?

Use the local arrival date in Azerbaijan from the final flight segment when choosing the visa start date. The date your first flight leaves the United States can be different.

Can I get an urgent Azerbaijan e-Visa with a passport about to expire?

Urgent processing does not relax passport rules. Check the US six-month arrival guidance and the requirement for validity beyond the e-Visa expiry. Resolve a borderline document with the airline and relevant representation before applying.

Are the $59 and $99 prices government visa fees?

They are evis.az service package totals per applicant: $59 for Standard or $99 for Urgent. Urgent is not $99 added to the Standard price. Review the selected package and payment currency in checkout before paying.

What are the Standard and Urgent package prices for American applicants?

The Standard package is $59 USD per applicant; Urgent is $99 USD per applicant. These are the total evis.az application service package prices. Choose either package to carry its processing option and total into the application form.
