Azerbaijan e-Visa for Swiss Citizens
Your Swiss passport’s Heimatort is a place of origin, not necessarily your birthplace. Select your actual country of birth in the application; the separate place-of-birth field is optional when it is not stated in the passport. Then check document dates and arrival before choosing a package.

The short answer
Do Swiss citizens need a visa for Azerbaijan?
Swiss ordinary passport holders normally need a visa for Azerbaijan and are eligible for the e-Visa route. The normal electronic visa permits one entry and up to 30 days within a 90-day window. Swiss residence or a Swiss identity card does not replace the passport nationality and document required for this application.
Before you start
Three checks for your Swiss passport
Separate origin from birthplace
Use the actual country of birth. The optional place-of-birth field can remain blank if the passport does not state it; do not substitute the Heimatort.
Use the passport’s nationality
A Swiss residence permit and Swiss citizenship are different. Select the country of the passport actually used for travel.
Read USD beside the total
The package prices are US dollars per applicant, not CHF. Review the payment currency and amount before checkout.

What should a Swiss traveller enter for place of birth?
Swiss official identity-document information refers to the place of origin among the personal details in a passport. A 2026 Swiss parliamentary question specifically addresses the absence of birthplace from Swiss passports. This matters when an overseas form asks for a different field: the Swiss commune of origin need not be the city or country where you were born.
This form requires Country of birth but makes the separate Place of birth field optional, with the instruction to enter it if stated in the passport. Select the true country in which you were born. If the passport does not state the place of birth, that optional text field can remain blank; there is no need to invent a city or upload a birth certificate.
Country of birth and present nationality can differ. A Swiss citizen born abroad should not change the country of birth to Switzerland merely to match passport nationality. Heimatort, lieu d’origine and current residence are not substitute answers. Clarify uncertainty about a required field before submission, without turning an absent optional passport detail into an extra document requirement.
A Swiss permit is not the same route as a Swiss passport
This guide is for ordinary Swiss passport holders. A person who lives in Switzerland with another nationality should select the passport country used for travel, rather than Switzerland solely because of a residence permit or address. Check any individual residence-based entry arrangement on its own terms.
Likewise, prepare the passport page rather than an identity card used for accepted European journeys. Read the document number from the passport being carried and compare surname and given names with that same page. If the travel document is provisional, emergency, refugee-related or otherwise non-standard, establish its acceptance and visa route individually before choosing this routine package.
Start with Switzerland already selected.
Use the visa end date and the passport intended for this journey
For the e-Visa route, passport validity must extend at least three months beyond the visa expiry. The end of a short Baku visit is not necessarily the end of the visa window. A passport valid through a weekend trip can therefore still need attention before the application.
If renewal is planned, prepare the visa using the replacement after it is issued. Compare the uploaded page, typed number and document saved in airline records. Do not assume an old visa becomes usable with a new passport merely because the person’s name has not changed.
Use the local Azerbaijan arrival from the final flight segment when selecting when the visa should start. A changed connection can alter that date. The normal 90-day window allows up to 30 days of stay, not three months in the country or repeated entries after leaving.
Choose a package, then review the identity behind the price
Standard is $59 USD per applicant with a three-working-day processing window. Urgent is $99 USD as its own total, with a three-hour option including weekends and holidays. These are evis.az package totals, not CHF prices or a guarantee that an incomplete application will be ready for a particular flight.
Before payment, check that the record describes the correct traveller, including the required country of birth. Each child needs a separate passport-based application. After issuance, review the PDF’s name, passport number, entry dates and stay, then print it for that passport.
For stays over 15 days, confirm place-of-stay registration with the hotel or private host. That administrative step is separate from the electronic visa, the payment and an accommodation booking.
Keep these to hand
Your Swiss passport application checklist
- Current Swiss passport and a readable identity-page image.
- Actual country of birth selected; optional birthplace left blank if not stated in the passport.
- Passport nationality distinguished from residence-permit status.
- Passport number, name fields and expiry checked against the same document.
- Local Azerbaijan arrival, accommodation and accessible email prepared.
- Individual family records and the USD package reviewed before payment.
Check passport expiry against the visa's expiry date: the passport must remain valid for at least three months after that date. The 90-day visa window does not allow a 90-day stay; the maximum stay is 30 days.
Prepare a readable passport image and the details in the full document and passport checklist.

Questions from Swiss travellers
Is the Heimatort in my Swiss passport my place of birth?
Not necessarily. Place of origin and birthplace are different concepts. When a form asks where you were born, establish the actual birthplace rather than automatically copying the commune of origin or current residence.
Must I fill the place-of-birth field or upload a birth certificate?
The Place of birth text field is optional when it is not stated in the passport. You still need to select the actual Country of birth. The required upload is the passport identity page, not an additional birth certificate.
Can I apply as Swiss using a Swiss residence permit?
Select the nationality of the passport used for this trip. A residence permit and Swiss citizenship are different. Check the actual passport’s eligibility and any applicable personal exception.
Are the $59 and $99 Azerbaijan packages in Swiss francs?
They are USD package totals per applicant: $59 for Standard or $99 for Urgent. Review the actual payment amount and currency and any card-issuer CHF conversion terms.
Can an e-Visa linked to my old Swiss passport be used with a replacement?
Do not assume the visa transfers to a new document number. Resolve the required permission if the passport changes, and keep the application, identity-page image and travel document consistent.
What are the Standard and Urgent package prices for Swiss applicants?
The Standard package is $59 USD per applicant; Urgent is $99 USD per applicant. These are the total evis.az application service package prices. Choose either package to carry its processing option and total into the application form.
